Bihar Results Live: Take as much time as required, EC tells officials

Bihar Results 2020 Live Updates: Counting of votes to 243 assembly seats in Bihar will take longer than any other assembly election counting, the Election Commission said during its mid-day briefing on Tuesday. As the number of electors in a booth was limited to adhere to the social distancing guidelines, the number of booths and EVMs has gone up. Counting, too, is being held at 55 locations this year, maintaining social distancing. One crore votes have so far been counted, the commission has said.

The counting began at 8am starting with postal ballots. Early trends kept Tejashwi Yadav-led Mahagathbandhan ahead, but as counting proceeded, the Mahagathbandhan lost a few of its earlier gains with the NDA now leading over the majority mark, the latest data of the Election Commission has revealed. As NDA has taken a lead, Congress leaders have started blaming ‘EVM fraud’ behind the sudden turn in the trends.

The three-phase Bihar Assembly Election 2020 was the first election to have been held amid the Covid-19 pandemic which, however, could not thwart voters. According to Election Commission data, the overall turnout this year was 57.05 per cent, marginally higher than that of 2015’s 56.66 per cent. The term of the 243-member assembly will come to an end on November 29. In the first phase of the election on October 28, 71 seats spread across 16 districts went to polls, while in the second phase, voters in 94 seats of 17 districts exercised their franchise on November 3, and in the third phase, 78 seats spread in 15 districts went to polls on November 7.

Apart from Tejashwi Yadav, the chief ministerial candidate of the Grand Alliance, prominent leaders whose fate will be decided today are Nand Kishore Yadav (Patna Sahib), Pramod Kumar (Motihari), Rana Randhir (Madhuban), Suresh Sharma (Muzaffarpur), Shrawan Kumar (Nalanda), Jai Kumar Singh (Dinara) and Krishnanandan Prasad Verma (Jehanabad).

The results could mark a watershed in 31-year-old Tejashwi Yadav’s career as a year ago in Lok Sabha election 2019, Rashtriya Janata Dal did not win a single seat. The NDA has won 39 of the 40 seats and one had gone to the Congress.Bihar result updates: Chandrika Rai loses from Parsa
